Most people do not plan an expensive event hoping that their guests have complaints. The reality is that it happens, sometimes more frequently than we know. If you want to avoid unhappy guests and complaints behind your back or in some cases to your face, consider the following top complaints and some ways to avoid them.
1. Conflicting Date
Many wedding guests are excited to prepare for, travel for, and attend your wedding. However, if you choose a date that conflicts with the typical person's schedule you may hear some complaints. The most common complaint surrounding dates is that it falls on a holiday or holiday weekend, when many people have long standing plans and commitments. A simple solution is to avoid holidays or other busy times for people's schedules such as back to school season. If you cannot avoid those times then be prepared to hear the complaints and simply shrug them off and keep on planning!
2. Plus One???
Some guests automatically assume that you are permitting them to bring a plus one. You on the other hand, may not be aware of their relationship status or desire to bring a date. You may also be on a budget and unwilling to have any additional and non-essential guests. Make this very clear on your invitations and reach out to any guests who RSVP for more people than you assigned.
3. Cash Bars
For the most part, wedding professionals are in agreement that cash bars are a major no-no at weddings. Some compare it to inviting guests to your house, implying that you would not ask for a guest to pay for a drink in your home. If you desire to have a bar at your wedding but are looking to cut costs, consider serving a limited selection or even a signature drink. You can also have the bar shut down a few hours into your reception to save you money.
4. Hot or Rainy Outdoor Weddings
Very few people if any, enjoy sitting outside in the rain or extreme heat. Before your ceremony has even started good, your guests may be cranky, tired, and ready to leave. Consider using fans for super hot days, or even having a sunset wedding instead of a wedding at high noon. You could even have an evening wedding illuminated by lights and candles outdoors. For rain protection, have a tent on stand by or an indoor space available just in case.
5. Nasty Food or Not Enough Food
It is so important to go with a caterer that will provide food that you and your guests will truly enjoy. Many brides go through several tastings to pick just the right menu and that is so crucial to ensure that you and your guests like the food. It is also essential to go with a caterer that will understand how to prepare ample enough food for your event. That does mean that you will need to be as precise as possible with your numbers and it is always best to build in a little more just in case.
